Portinari painted his first mural in 1936, for the Rio/São Paulo highway monument, measuring 1m x 8m.

Apart from that, he executed numerous panels throughout Brazil and the 'Via Sacra' series, in the Igreja da Pampulha in Belo Horizonte, enormous and marvellous panels.

In 1951, he participated in the 1st São Paulo Biennial.

CHAPEL OF THE GRANDMOTHER

Built in 1941 in a room in the gardens of the residence in Brodowski, Portinari gifted his grandmother, who could no longer move around to attend mass and pray in the city church, the opportunity to attend mass and pray in the comfort of her own home.

In the Chapel of the Grandmother, Portinari represented the saints preferred by his grandmother, where his family members were used as models.

DEATH - LEGACY 

Portinari died on February 6, 1962, in Rio de Janeiro, intoxicated by the paints he used so much.

He left numerous works depicting Brazil not only for Brazilians but for the world.

Candido Portinari is considered one of the most prestigious artists in Brazil and was the Brazilian painter to achieve the greatest international projection.

Although he lived only 59 years, the painter produced a lot: over five thousand canvases, drawings and murals.

SOME WORKS BY PORTINARI THAT DEPICT THE CHILD UNIVERSE

By painting this 'Festa de São João', Portinari created a composition entirely worked with triangles in pink tones, to honor São Pedro and the square fire being set up in the style of Santo Antônio.
